Ten for Ten

It is hard to believe we’re already ten months into this year. As we work through this tenth month, we want to share with you Ten Things to Ask Yourself when improving your organization.

 1.  Do we "live" our mission?
 2.  Are we efficient?
 3.  Do we provide top shelf customer service?
 4.  Do we have the right talent onboard?
 5.  Do we provide them with the skills they need to excel?
 6.  Do we have a current strategic plan to guide us to success?
 7.  Does our team collaborate well?
 8.  Are we listening to our customers/stakeholders?
 9.  What needs improving?
10.  How do we stay relevant in this fast paced environment?

Scott Fleming, CEcD, Hired as Executive Director

DeSoto (TX) Economic Development Corporation

Scott Fleming

Scott Fleming, CEcD, of the Enterprise Group of Jackson (Michigan) has been hired as the new Executive Director of the DeSoto (TX) Economic Development Corporation. During his tenure in Jackson, MI, he and his team were successful in bringing in over $240 million in investments and more than 1000 jobs to the area.

Before joining to the Enterprise Group of Jackson in 2008, Scott Fleming was in economic development and commercial real estate for nearly 20 years. He has directed strategic planning endeavors for large metropolitan areas, small communities, professional associations and nonprofit organizations. Before that, with DTE Energy for 14 years, he successfully recruited new businesses, developed innovative financing strategies, created business recruitment and retention programs and advanced the development of business and technology parks.

Curtistene S. McCowan, DeSoto EDC Board President said, "On behalf of our Board of Directors and staff, I am honored to welcome Scott to the DeSoto Economic Development Corporation. His economic development and real estate experience, proven leadership and numerous accomplishments give him an excellent background for leading our organization. We look forward to working with Scott and wish him every success in his new role."

When we asked Scott about his new position, he had this to say:  "I'm excited about the opportunity to work in a community with such a strong commitment to economic development. I look forward to building on the solid foundation that DeSoto has already established.  My wife, Lisa Donovan, a professional writer and editor, and I are anxious to put down roots here and become active members of the community."

From Plan to Implementation

Need a Work Plan to Kick Start Your Economic Development Strategic Plan?

Does your community have an economic development strategic plan that has yet to be implemented? Often, strategic plans provide an excellent big picture of what needs to be done to accomplish a community’s economic development goals and objectives, but do not offer specific details on how to set the plan in motion. The creation of a work plan is one way you can effectively kick start your economic development strategic plan.

J&A Associates, David Partlow and Margaret Winks, work closely with rural economic development departments and chambers of commerce to transform their strategic plan into a step-by-step action plan that is straightforward and affordable. In many cases, we can develop a work plan that can be implemented immediately in just one full-day workshop. To learn more or to schedule a workshop, contact J&A Associates today at (512) 339-9000 or johnson@jatoday.com.

Congratulations to Chairman E. Ray Covey of the Texas Economic Development Council for the outstanding 50th Anniversary celebration Annual Conference last week in Fort Worth! Ray is Manager of Economic Development and Government Affairs at AEP Texas. Ray and his conference committee, as well as the hardworking TEDC staff, delivered an informative and timely program with insightful and thought-provoking speakers. With experts such as Ross Perot Jr.; Mark James of Ed Solutions; Richard Fisher, President of the Federal Reserve Bank Dallas; Matthew Rose, Chairman & CEO of BNSF Railway; and Todd Staples, Commissioner, Texas Department of Agriculture, and many others, it was destined to be a fantastic conference.

One of Chloe's favorite sessions was the TEDC Legacy Panel which showcased the 50 year history of the organization and milestones along the way. Chloe said "Having been a member since 1979 and proud to be TEDC's first female to serve on the board of directors as well as the first female CEcD, it was delightful to be reminded of so many old stories and hear some "new" old stories!" Thanks to Past Chairmen Bill Shelton, Kent Fuller, Curtis Cleveland, and Tom Mullins for sharing their experiences & memories, and especially thanks to Lorie Vincent for making sure her idea of sharing the TEDC legacy came to fruition!
